Eye Emergencies

All the following should be considered eye emergencies:

  • Sudden vision loss
  • Acute glaucoma symptoms
  • Object embedded in the eye
  • Scratched eye/cornea
  • Chemicals in the eye
  • Sudden onset of abnormal pupil size or shape

Whether you feel pain or not, all the above should be treated as emergencies. Call immediately for help and guidance.

What Not to Do in an Eye Emergency

In an eye emergency, you should avoid anything that will lead to further injury, this includes:

  • Putting pressure on the eye
  • Touching an injured eye
  • Removing foreign bodies from the cornea or embedded in the eye
  • Putting dry cotton on the eye
  • Using tweezers or sharp objects on the eye

If there are recommended steps you can take to treat injury, we can tell you, but in most cases taking action without training can do more harm than good.
